The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is looking for people, organizations, and governments that are working on environmentally responsible solutions to the problem of plastic contamination and would like to be nominated.
Individuals, groups, and organisations whose actions have a significant positive effect on the environment are recognised and honoured with the Champions of the Earth award.
Categories Policy Leadership Award: This category of award recognises individuals or organisations in public service whose actions and leadership have brought about significant, beneficial change for the environment within their country or internationally. This award may be presented to the winner of another category.
Inspiration and Action Award: This award category recognises individuals or organisations that have taken bold environmental action in urging and producing decisive positive change on behalf of the planet and its inhabitants. This change may be in the form of either urging for change or actually bringing about change. Others are inspired and motivated by their leadership and by the example they set.
The Entrepreneurial Vision Award is given to individuals or organisations that are able to challenge the status quo in their respective fields. The recipients of this award show that environmental sustainability and financial profitability are not mutually exclusive concepts.
This award category recognises individuals or organisations whose pioneering work pushes the boundaries of human knowledge and technology, while also having a positive effect on the environment.
The Criteria for Eligibility
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Champions are chosen from nominations submitted from all over the globe, and participation in the programme is open to anyone.
Individuals, groups, and organisations whose actions have a significant positive effect on the environment are recognised and honoured with the Champions of the Earth award.

The Process of Selection
Each nomination is reviewed and taken into consideration by a group of UNEP staff members and subject matter specialists.
These are the parameters that will be used to select:
Impact – Have the actions of the nominee resulted in significant environmental benefits or shown significant potential for replication and scaling?
Novelty – Does the candidate have anything that can be considered novel or innovative to their resume?
The impact of the story – How captivating and motivational is the nominee’s personal narrative?
