How To Apply and Qualify For Public Diplomacy Grants Program in Mexico 2023

The U.S. Mission Mexico Public Diplomacy Section (PD) of the U.S. Department of State is pleased to announce that its Public Diplomacy Grants Program is accepting applications.

The purpose of Small Grants is to strengthen cultural ties between the United States and Mexico through cultural, economic, educational, professional, and exchange programming that emphasises shared values and promotes bilateral cooperation.

All programmes must include a U.S. cultural element or a connection to a U.S. expert/s, organisation/s, or institution/s in a particular discipline in order to promote a greater understanding of U.S. policy and perspectives.

Examples of programmes funded by the PD Small Grants Program include, but are not limited to:

  • Academic and professional seminars, lecture series, and speaker events
    Workshops, joint performances, clinics, and exhibitions in the arts, culture, education, and athletics.
  • Programs for cultural heritage conservation and preservation
    Academic and professional exchanges and programmes.
  • Prioritized Program Domains
  • Economic Development: Economic programmes fostering prosperity in Mexico, including programmes that aim to protect labour rights under USMCA; programmes focused on economic development in southern Mexico; programmes that improve cybersecurity; programmes aimed at increasing the number, capacity, and innovation of micro-, small-, and medium-sized businesses; programmes that enhance opportunities for and promote entrepreneurship for women, young Mexicans, Indigenous or Afro-Mexican indigenes; and programmes that increase the number, capacity, and innovation of micro-, small-, and
  • Workforce Development: Programs promoting the development of the Mexican workforce for technical skills, particularly in the fields of information and communication technologies, zero-emission vehicles, and the semiconductor industry; and programmes enhancing the quality of English language instruction as part of workforce development activities.
  • Academic Exchanges & Education: Programs that promote and increase the number of Mexican students in U.S. higher education institutions; programmes that increase partnerships between higher education institutions in Mexico and the United States, including private sector support to increase Mexican student and professor collaboration with U.S. counterparts; programmes that foster academic, educational, and professional exchanges between Mexico and the United States.
    Programs focused on integrating non-Mexican migrants into Mexican society.
  • Security & Human Rights: Programs that increase understanding of U.S. security policy; programmes centred on the protection of human rights for at-risk and underserved communities, women and girls, journalists, and human rights defenders; programmes to strengthen rule of law cooperation in Mexico; and programmes designed to implement professional programmes with the Mexican media, counter disinformation and the malign influence of foreign actors.
    Climate Variation Resilience: Programs promoting resilience and sustainability, including those aimed at developing and increasing the use of clean, renewable energy sources; programmes addressing global health challenges; programmes focusing on increasing and ensuring food and water security; programmes promoting economic sustainability; programmes promoting and protecting critical ecosystems and biodiversity; programmes implementing global climate initiatives.

Audiences in Mexico targeted by the priority programme areas are: Students, educators, and scholars, Girls and ladies, Native and Afro-Mexican inhabitantsLGBTQI+ entities, Young executives and business owners, Higher education establishments, Officials from the local, state, and federal governmentsPrivate sectorJournalists from established and emerging media, Human rights activists and environmentalists, Athletes, instructors, officials, sport administrators, as well as sports leagues and organisations.at-risk teens.

Eligibility Standards

The Public Affairs Section encourages applications from American and Mexican citizens who are: Registered non-profit organisations with programming experience, including think institutes and civil society/non-governmental organisations.Individuals.Governmental or non-profit educational institutions.Administrative institutions.Funding applicants from the United States must form a partnership with a Mexican organisation. Commercial and non-profit organisations are ineligible to register.

Other Eligibility Criteria Each applicant may submit only one proposal per organisation. If more than one proposal is submitted by an institution, all of those proposals will be deemed ineligible for funding.An organisation must have a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) number and a legitimate registration in order to be eligible for an award.

The following programme categories do not qualify for funding: Programming associated with partisan political activityCharitable or development activitiesConstruction planningSupport programmes for specific religious activities, Fundraising initiatives, Efforts to influence specific legislation or programmesAcademic researchPrograms designed predominantly for the organisation’s growth or institutional development, or Programs that duplicate existing programs.
